As the core power source of offshore drilling platforms, it undertakes the important mission of supplying electricity for all equipment and systems, ensuring the safety, efficiency and continuity of offshore operations. 1. What is an Offshore Drilling Diesel Generator Set?

An offshore drilling diesel generator set is a special power generation equipment designed and manufactured for the unique environment of offshore drilling platforms. It is mainly composed of four core components: diesel engine, generator, control system and auxiliary equipment (cooling system, fuel system, lubrication system, etc.). Different from land-based diesel generator sets, offshore models must undergo special design and transformation to adapt to the harsh marine conditions such as high salt spray, high humidity, strong vibration, limited space and frequent extreme weather.

Its core function is to convert the chemical energy of diesel into mechanical energy through the diesel engine, and then convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy through the generator, so as to provide stable AC or DC power for the entire drilling platform. From the huge drilling rigs, mud pumps and well control equipment to the daily life facilities such as lighting, air conditioning and communication systems on the platform, almost all electrical equipment depends on the power supply of diesel generator sets.

2. Working Principle: How Does It Generate Power Continuously?

The power generation process of offshore diesel generator sets follows a simple and efficient energy conversion chain: diesel combustion → mechanical energy output → electrical energy generation, which is mainly completed through the coordinated operation of the diesel engine and the generator.

First, the diesel engine completes a four-stroke working cycle to generate mechanical energy. The four strokes include intake stroke, compression stroke, power stroke and exhaust stroke. During the intake stroke, air is sucked into the cylinder; in the compression stroke, the piston compresses the air to increase its temperature and pressure; when the compression stroke is nearly completed, the fuel injector sprays atomized diesel into the high-temperature and high-pressure air, which ignites and burns quickly, generating high-temperature and high-pressure gas to push the piston down to do work (power stroke); finally, the exhaust valve opens, and the piston pushes the exhaust gas out of the cylinder (exhaust stroke). This cycle is repeated continuously to drive the crankshaft of the diesel engine to rotate at a stable speed, outputting mechanical energy[9].

Then, the generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. The rotor of the synchronous generator is equipped with an excitation winding, which generates a magnetic field after being connected to DC current. When the diesel engine drives the rotor to rotate, the magnetic field also rotates with the rotor. According to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, the stator winding cuts the magnetic lines of force of the rotor, thereby generating an induced electromotive force. After the induced electromotive force is generated, current will be produced in the closed load circuit, which is transmitted to various electrical equipment through the terminal of the generator to realize power supply[5].

In addition, the control system is like the "brain" of the generator set. It is equipped with an electronic governor and an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) to ensure stable power output. The electronic governor adjusts the fuel supply in real time according to the speed change to maintain the stability of the AC frequency; the AVR adjusts the magnitude of the excitation current according to the change of the output voltage to keep the output voltage stable, so that the power supply can meet the requirements of various precision equipment on the platform[5].

3. Special Design: Adapting to the Harsh Offshore Environment

Offshore drilling platforms are in a harsh environment all year round, with high salt spray, high humidity, strong wind and waves, and limited installation space. Therefore, offshore diesel generator sets must have special designs to ensure reliable operation in such environments, which is the key difference from land-based generator sets.

First of all, anti-corrosion design is essential. The marine environment is rich in salt ions, which are highly corrosive to metal components. Therefore, the shell, pipeline, engine block and other components of the generator set are treated with special anti-corrosion processes, such as galvanizing, spraying anti-corrosion paint, or using corrosion-resistant alloys, to prevent rust and corrosion and extend the service life of the equipment.

Secondly, anti-vibration and anti-shock design is required. The offshore platform will shake violently under the action of wind and waves, which will cause damage to the internal components of the generator set. These equipment are essential for the normal operation of the platform, and their power supply cannot be interrupted.

In terms of daily life on the platform, it provides power for lighting, air conditioning, water supply and drainage, communication, and catering systems. The staff on the platform need a comfortable living environment, and the normal operation of these facilities is directly related to the work efficiency and physical and mental health of the staff. At the same time, the communication system (such as radar, radio) also relies on stable power to ensure the contact between the platform and the shore and other ships.

The key maintenance points are as follows:

First, daily inspection. Before starting the generator set every day, check the oil level, coolant level, and fuel volume to ensure they are within the normal range; check the battery voltage and wiring to ensure they are firm and free of looseness; check the air filter for blockage and the connection parts for leaks. During operation, regularly monitor the instrument parameters, such as oil pressure (should be kept within 2-5bar), coolant temperature (not exceeding 90℃), output voltage (fluctuation not exceeding ±5%), and frequency (stable at 50/60Hz ±0.5Hz), and pay attention to listening to the engine sound and observing the exhaust color for abnormalities[6].

Second, regular maintenance. According to the manufacturer's recommendations, carry out regular maintenance according to the operation hours: replace the engine oil and oil filter every 250 hours; clean or replace the air filter every 500 hours; check and adjust the valve clearance every 1000 hours; clean the fuel system and cooling system every 2000 hours. For generator sets that have not been used for a long time, they should be started regularly for no-load operation to prevent component aging.

Third, special maintenance for offshore environment. Strengthen the anti-corrosion inspection, regularly check the anti-corrosion layer of the equipment, and touch up the paint in time if there is damage; regularly clean the salt spray on the surface of the equipment to avoid corrosion; check the shock absorber regularly to ensure its shock absorption effect; establish a key spare parts inventory, including filters, belts, sensors, etc., to facilitate timely replacement in case of failure, which is particularly important for offshore platforms far from the shore[6].

Fourth, fault handling. If the generator set fails (such as difficulty in starting, insufficient power, low oil pressure), it should be shut down in time for inspection. For example, difficulty in starting may be caused by insufficient battery power or fuel system problems; insufficient power may be due to blocked air filters or poor fuel quality. After troubleshooting, the equipment can be restarted to avoid further damage. In case of sudden shutdown, the load should be cut off first, and the cause of the protection device action should be checked.

6. Development Trend: More Efficient, Environmentally Friendly and Intelligent

With the continuous development of offshore oil and gas exploration technology and the increasing requirements for environmental protection and energy conservation, offshore drilling diesel generator sets are also developing in the direction of high efficiency, environmental protection and intelligence.

In terms of energy conservation and efficiency improvement, manufacturers are constantly optimizing the structure of diesel engines, adopting technologies such as common rail fuel injection and turbocharging intercooling to improve fuel utilization rate and reduce fuel consumption.
